- Answering your questions
- We sell fonts licensing, and this FAQ aims to answer all your questions related to our fonts, our licensing, and our shop. Please email us for any other questions, for example to find out about the world’s cutest dog. Depending on the licensee’s location, a different licensing agreement will apply. Please review our EULA for customers in the United States and anywhere else in the world.
Licensing overview
- I want to buy your fonts. What’s font licensing?
- Fonts are software that you must purchase licensing for. Technically speaking, you’re not purchasing the fonts themselves, but the license (the right) to use them within the rules established by our licensing agreements. We offer licensing types for any use, and each of those licensing types can be purchased in multiple sizes depending on your requirements.
- What licenses do you offer?
- We have three main licensing types: Purchase Desktop licensing to use our fonts on your computer to create images and documents for print and on screen. Desktop licensing is calculated per computer the files are installed on within a single organization. Get Web licensing to use our fonts on your website with @font-face technology. Web licensing is calculated by the maximum of unique monthly visitors to the website. And lastly, we have App licensing for using our fonts directly in your mobile and desktop apps. App licensing is calculated by the numbers of developers working on your apps. Find more information about each licensing type on this page.
- What are the licensing terms?
- The End User License Agreement (EULA) contains the legally binding terms for using our fonts. Read them in full here.
- Are there any recurring costs?
- No. We don’t like subscriptions in our lives, so we don’t offer them either. All of our licensing is a one-time fee.
- How long do licenses last?
- All of our licensing is forever. Seriously! As long as you can install the font formats we offer on some theoretical future computer in the year 2120, you can use them.
- I purchased some licensing, and now I need more. Do I get a discount?
- Absolutely. You only ever pay for the upgrade—the difference between your previous licensing cost and the larger licensing tier that you’re upgrading your purchased styles or packages to. Just send us an email and we’ll walk you through the process.
- What languages do your fonts support?
- All of our fonts cover our standard Latin-alphabet character set, which covers many, many Latin-alphabet languages. English, Spanish, German, French, and so on—all covered. Each typeface’s page contains a list of all covered languages. Additionally, many of our typefaces now also support Cyrillic, Greek, and Vietnamese. You can add that language support directly in our shop during the purchasing process.
- You used to have standard and Pro fonts. What happened?
- We used to only offer Latin and Cyrillic support, and the Pro fonts contained both. Except that we now also offer Greek and Vietnamese, with further writing systems coming soon. Now, your fonts’ support for additional script is signified in the file names and in your app’s font menus. After the font name you find C for Cyrillic, G for Greek, and V for additional Vietnamese support. All fonts support our Latin character set.
- My company would like to modify some of the terms in your license. Is this possible?
- Yes and no—some things we can talk about, others are not possible. Best send us an email and we can see what makes the most sense.
- How do I buy fonts for a third party, like my client?
- It’s super simple when you’re using the “Share your cart as a link” button. You can put together a cart with the right fonts and licensing, share that with them, and they pay for it. Or you can purchase it for them by going ahead and clicking “I’m ordering for a third party” during your checkout process. If you do it this way, you will still need your own licensing—all of our licenses are for a single organization, so you can’t share the license with your clients.
- How can I buy variable fonts licensing?
- Some of our typefaces are now available in the new variable fonts format. After purchase of full family licensing of these typefaces, you can email us and we will provide you with the variable font files. As of now, GT Flexa, GT Alpina, GT America, GT America Intl, GT Maru, GT Ultra, GT Planar and GT Pressura are available as variable fonts—and we’re working on expanding the support across our library. So please email us if you’re looking for another typeface in this format, and we’ll do our best!
Desktop licensing
- What uses does Desktop licensing include?
- Please refer to our licensing agreement for the legally binding terms. Essentially, this license covers the use in programs where you create an output, like Adobe’s Creative Suite, Figma, or Microsoft Office. For example, this license is required for creating printed documents, videos, social media posts, and logos. This license covers the embedding of font files into PDF files, but not into a file of any other kind.
- What font formats do you offer for Desktop-licensed fonts?
- Desktop fonts are delivered as PostScript OpenType font files in OTF format. Upon request by email, we also happily offer TrueType TTF files after your purchase.
- How do I know which licensing tier I require?
- The correct licensing tier is determined by how many computers you need to install the fonts on. You may only install them within a single organization. You cannot share a license with your clients—but on the other hand, only organizations that need to install the font files require a license.
- Can I give the fonts to freelancers?
- Freelancers not working at one of your business locations and not on your own computers need their own, separate licensing.
- Can I give the fonts to printers?
- Yes. You can give the font files to printers and prepress bureaus that work for you on an as-need basis.
Web licensing
- What uses does Web licensing include?
- Please refer to our licensing agreement for the legally binding terms. This license allows you to use our typefaces on websites with the @font-face technology. Web fonts are licensed for a certain number of unique monthly visitors.
- What font formats do you offer for Web-licensed fonts?
- Web fonts are delivered in a number of formats to ensure broad compatibility with modern and old browsers. We deliver TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats for our web fonts licensing.
- What number of websites can I use my fonts on?
- You can use our web fonts on any number of websites, servers, and domains, as long as they’re all controlled by your organization. This includes the use of staging servers.
- How is my Web licensing tier calculated?
- This license pricing is based off the projected number of unique monthly visitors you will have. The overall, combined number of all unique visitors per month to your sites needs to be covered by your licensing. If you find that the actual number exceeds the tier you purchased please email us to inquire about upgrading your license.
- Do you offer hosted web fonts?
- We only offer self-hosted web fonts. You can just load the fonts onto your website and use them—and you’re not dependent on one more service that may or may not be online at any given time.
- Do I need to set up any security measures?
- We don’t believe in making our paying customers’ lives harder for technical safety mechanisms that aren’t really safe, anyway. You don’t need to install any tracking code or set up your server in a specific way. We trust you to use our fonts fairly and pay for the licensing you need.
App licensing
- What uses does App licensing include?
- Please refer to our licensing agreement for the legally binding terms. This license allows you to embed our fonts within applications. Our fonts can be used in apps for both desktop and mobile platforms.
- What font formats do you offer for App-licensed fonts?
- App fonts are delivered as PostScript OpenType font files in OTF format. Upon request by email, we also happily offer TrueType TTF files after your purchase.
- How do I know which licensing tier I require?
- This license pricing is tied to the number of computers used to design and develop your apps. It has no relation to the number of downloads or users after the release.
- How many apps can I use the fonts in?
- As many as you can code! As our licensing is based on the number of developers working on your apps, there’s no limit on the number of apps they create—or for which operating system the apps are built for.
Trial fonts
- What are trial fonts?
- We offer all of our typefaces as trial fonts so that you can test them in your designs before buying any licensing. The trial fonts contain only a minimal character set and lack all the OpenType features available in the retail versions.
- What can I do with the trial fonts?
- Please refer to our licensing agreement for the legally binding terms. You can install the trial fonts on your computer and use them in any of your mockups, including website prototypes. You can show them to your team, friends, or clients. Once you decide to use the fonts, or your client gives you the green light, you can purchase the appropriate licensing. And if you don’t use them, you don’t need to buy anything!
- What additional things can students do with the trial fonts?
- If you’re a student at a design school, you can use the trial fonts in your projects without buying further licensing. As long as the project is a school-based, non-commercial project, you’re good to go! If you do want to purchase licensing as a student or recent graduate, you can apply the Grilli Junior discount at checkout.
More licensing types
- Do you offer unlimited or corporate licensing?
- We do indeed. We offer a licensing tier specifically created for the needs and requirements of larger companies. The cost for unlimited-tier licensing starts at $10,000 per style. Please email us for more information.
- Server licensing
- Server licensing covers automated document creation, for example for the creation of tens or hundreds of thousands of invoices each month, and usage in design tools like Canva. The licensing cost is based on the number of documents per year that you need to create. Please contact us to learn more.
- HTML5 Ad licensing
- These are ads that contain the font files to load live text for online ads. The licensing cost is based on the number of impressions per year that you require. Write us an email for more info.
- Office Embed licensing
- Embedding a font in an MS Office file requires our Office Embed licensing. The licensing cost is based on the number of computers using these fonts within documents in your organization. The regular Desktop license allows you to use the fonts in all Microsoft Office applications, but it does not allow you to embed the fonts in Microsoft Office files you send to third parties; the Office Embed license solves that. Please email us for further information and pricing.
- Device Embed licensing
- This type of license allows you to ship your product with our font software included in it, for example a set-top box or computer. Please contact us for more information.
- Can I use your fonts for commercial uses?
- Yes! Some type foundries limit what they call commercial use and differentiate between that and private usage. We don’t.
- Can I use your fonts to create ads?
- Absolutely. As long as the computers used to create the documents are covered with Desktop licensing, the resulting PDF, AVI, GIF, JPG, etc. files can be used in any way—including OOH and other advertising types.
- Can I use your fonts for broadcast use?
- Yes, you can use our fonts for broadcast use, on TV, in movies, on Youtube, and so on. As long as the computers used to create the content are covered with Desktop licensing, you’re good.
- Can I use your fonts on social media?
- Same same—yes! Just make sure the computers used for the creation of any social media posts using our fonts are covered with Desktop licensing, and you’re golden.
- Can I use your fonts for a logo?
- This is getting a little repetitive—but yes, absolutely. No special license needed to use our fonts for logos, as long as the computers used in creating the logo are covered.

- All prices on our site are in US Dollars. All orders from Switzerland cost an additional 8.1% to cover VAT.
- Can I pay by credit card?
- Our shop accepts all major credit cards. Mastercard, Discover, American Express, JCB, and Visa should all work.
- Why is my credit card being declined?
- Our shop works with the payment processor Stripe, who in turn works together with banks and card issuing companies. That’s why we never know the exact reason why a particular card is declined. Please call your credit card company and bank to tell them to green-light your purchase in our shop if this happens.
- Can I pay by wire transfer?
- Please email us if you would like to make a purchase by bank wire transfer. We accept wire transfers for purchases over $250.
- Do you offer discounts?
- Yes! There are multi-license and family discounts offered in our shop, and discounts that apply to students and recent graduates through our Grilli Junior initiative.
- What is your refund policy?
- Our product is a piece of software, so we cannot verify if you have deleted it or not, as such, we cannot offer any refunds for unused purchases. We can only offer refunds for reasons described in our licensing agreements. If you cannot use our fonts for technical reasons we will work with you to solve these problems. If we cannot assist you then we will offer a refund.
- Can I license your fonts elsewhere?
- No. We offer our fonts for licensing exclusively on our own website, under the terms described in our licensing agreements, at the price listed in our shop.
Using our fonts
- What font formats will I get?
- This depends on your licensing type. Desktop fonts are offered as OTF files, and as TTF on request. Web fonts are offered as TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2. App fonts are offered as OTF fonts, and as TTF on request.
- Can I modify your fonts?
- While you are not allowed to modify the font software, you can outline our fonts in your design tool and change it that way. This is often done for logos, and is within your rights. For modifications to the actual font files, we offer a variety of options fitting for small and large companies.
- Can I share a license with my client?
- No. As stipulated in our EULA, our licenses aren’t cross-organizational. That is to say, if you purchase a license to produce the design for your client that is a license for your company. If your client then needs files to produce output themselves they will require a license of their own.
- How do I use Web fonts?
- While using web fonts is quite easy, our Web Fonts Guide offers all the necessary information to do it on your own, as long as you know a little bit of CSS and HTML. Additionally, it contains some great tips to get the most out of your web fonts.
- Does every application support OpenType features?
- While most design applications support OpenType features, please note that there are some, including PowerPoint, Excel and AutoCad, that do not.
